New World Academy #3: Leaderless Politics
13-15 December 2013
BAK, basis voor actuele kunst Utrecht
The New World Academy, founded by artist Jonas Staal and BAK, basis voor actuele kunst Utrecht, invites organizations invested in the progressive political project to collaborate with artists and students on the role of art at the center of political struggle.
Session III: Leaderless Politics
In this session the notion of leaderless politics was studied through the optics of Pirate Parties International. The participants reflected upon the implications the Pirate Parties’ political programs and horizontal structure hold for the future of artistic production, such as the critical issues of open source and equal access, among others. The participants, teachers, and coordinators worked together to develop an online and digital campaign for a leaderless party.
From December 13-15 representatives of the international Pirate Parties worked together with about 25 artists and students to develop a new educational model, a “Pirate Academy” entitled “ALT,” that teaches civil society at large basic techniques of privacy protection, for example e-mail encryption and secure internet browsing. Early 2014 ALT started with a series of educational sessions on art schools and universities, disseminating the basic tools necessary to give citizens agency over their own lives and visibility. It is through the shift from representative politics to concrete tools that the notion of leaderless politics is enacted – by giving concrete agency to civil society at large.
